Sheikh Hasina, the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, will return to Bangladesh soon, currently residing in Delhi, India. The country is on fire due to widespread student protests against the Government’s Quota system in job placements. On August 5, 2024, Hasina arrived in India with assistance from the Bangladeshi Army and landed at Hindon Airbase in Ghaziabad, near the capital city.
Sheikh Hasina’s Plans to Return to Bangladesh
In a recent interview, Hasina’s son, Sajeeb Wazed, revealed that his mother plans to return to Bangladesh once the situation stabilizes. Wazed stated, “For the time being, she (Hasina) is in India. She will go back to Bangladesh the moment the interim government decides to hold an election.”

Hasina’s Asylum Claims
There were speculations that Hasina had sought asylum from countries like the USA, UK, and Finland, but these were unfounded. Wazed clarified that his mother never requested asylum because she did not wish to leave her country or her party, the Awami League.
Gratitude to Prime Minister Modi
Wazed expressed his gratitude to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for providing shelter to his mother. He emphasized that Hasina is now safe in India. “First, I want to express my gratitude to Prime Minister Modi. With sincere gratitude, I will say my mother is safe now,” Wazed said. He also noted, “There was no active involvement of the Indian government until our government fell, not even during the initial days of the crisis.”
Safety of Bangladeshi Hindus
Regarding the safety of Hindus in Bangladesh, Wazed assured that if the Awami League returns to power, Hindus would remain safe. He said, “If the Awami League comes back to power, I can say for sure that Hindus will be safe. If we don’t, then I am not very sure about their future.” Wazed also mentioned that he is open to joining politics if necessary, and he believes the Awami League might win the upcoming elections. He assured, “Hindus will be safe in Bangladesh under Awami League’s rule.”
Call for Early Elections
Wazed believes that the “only solution” to the ongoing crisis in Bangladesh is an early election, and he is confident that the Awami League will return to power.
Khalida Zia and BNP Party
On the other side, Khalida Zia, leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and former Prime Minister, recently released from jail, is also eyeing a return to power. BNP senior leader Gayeshwar Roy criticized India’s support for Hasina. He expressed concerns about India’s role, saying, “Sheikh Hasina’s liability is being borne by India… Indian and Bangladeshi people don’t have issues with each other. But should India promote one party and not the entire country?”
He also added “if you help our enemy then it becomes difficult for that mutual cooperation to be honoured”. He said, they have concerns that India supported Sheikh Hasina’s return to power.
