Supreme Court’s Remarks On Dr. Debnath’s Murder and Assault have brought new insights into the ongoing investigation. The court’s comments highlight critical aspects of the case and set the stage for further legal proceedings
Dr. Moumita Debnath, a second-year trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, faced a horrifying tragedy. After a grueling 36-hour shift, she was resting in the hospital’s Seminar Hall on the 3rd floor. The next morning, staff discovered her body in a shocking state.
Sanjay Roy on the Night of the Crime
Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, stands accused. CCTV footage shows him entering the seminar hall at 4 am and leaving at 4:40 am. Additionally, The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) found Sanjay’s Headphones in the seminar hall, which led to his arrest.
In addition, reports suggest that Sanjay, along with his friend Sourav, drank alcohol the night of the crime. The CBI is investigating Sourav’s potential involvement. The Kolkata Police claimed that “Sanjay Roy and Sourav visited two brothels in the city that night, including Sonagachi Red Light Area, and drank together”.
Sandip Ghosh: A Key Suspect
Sandip Ghosh, the former Principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, is also under suspicion. Allegations of Mafia Connections, Organ Trafficking, and Corruption surround him.
Above all, as a Principal it was Dr. Sandip’s duty to file an FIR for Dr. Debnath’s murder; instead, her parents had to take that step. On top of it, Dr. Ghosh has controversially labeled Dr. Debnath’s death as a suicide rather than a murder.
CBI Investigation Details
The CBI’s investigation revealed that Dr. Debnath dined with 4 other Doctors on the night of August 8th. They ordered food online, and 1 doctor went downstairs to collect the food.
The CBI suspects that Sanjay Roy received help from others to find Dr. Debnath in the Seminar Hall. CCTV Footage shows Sanjay moving directly to the 3rd floor, entering the seminar room, and returning without stopping anywhere else. Consequently, the footage raises questions about how Sanjay knew Dr. Debnath was on the 3rd floor and why authorities did not question or stop him.
Supreme Court’s Remarks on Dr. Moumita Debnath’s Murder and Assault
The Supreme Court has voiced several concerns during its sessions:
* Safety of Women and Healthcare Workers: The Court questioned whether Women and Healthcare Workers are safe at their workplaces. They emphasized that if women feel unsafe at work, it undermines their Fundamental Right to equality.
* Polygraph Tests: The judges called for Polygraph Tests for Sanjay Roy, Sandip Ghosh, the 4 doctors, and 1 intern, along with the hospital staff on duty.
* Challenges for Moumita’s Parents: The hospital initially tried to label the death as a Suicide, not a Murder, and did not file the FIR. Dr. Debnath’s parents had to handle this themselves and were forced to wait to see their daughter’s body.
* Sandip Ghosh’s New Role: The Court questioned how Sandip Ghosh, who resigned following the incident, was quickly appointed as the Principal at Calcutta National Medical College.
* Police and Administrative Negligence: The Supreme Court scrutinized why the police delayed filing the FIR and why Sandip Ghosh did not file it himself. The Court also questioned the police’s response when the hospital was vandalized by around 7,000 people.
* Public Outrage: The Supreme Court expressed dissatisfaction with how protestors were treated. They criticized the Kolkata Police for physically charging at peaceful protestors, including healthcare workers, students, and corporate employees and also social – media influencers. The Court reaffirmed that it is the Constitutional Right of Citizens to Protest.
Ongoing Public Protests
Protestors continue to demand “Justice for Dr. Moumita Debnath“. They criticize the West Bengal Government for its failure to properly investigate the case and ensure safety.
Many of the protestors are students, social media influencers, corporate workers, and healthcare professionals, all calling for justice and improved workplace safety. They feel that their government has neglected their fundamental rights.
Final Thoughts
To conclude, The Supreme Court’s remarks have intensified scrutiny of the case. The ongoing protests reflect deep dissatisfaction with the investigation and the state’s handling of the situation.
The question remains: Has the West Bengal Government failed to ensure the “Safety of Women and Healthcare Workers?” Do let us know in the comment.
